Plans for CARJ 40th Anniversary Year

The Catholic Association for Racial Justice (CARJ) is 40!

It was established on 16 June 1984 at a meeting of approximately 25 ‘founding members’ from a variety of ethnic backgrounds.  CARJ was seen as an organisation where ethnic minorities could find support and a voice, and where people of all backgrounds could work together for racial justice.  From the beginning it was understood that people of African, Caribbean and Asian backgrounds would have a key place in the leadership of the organisation.

Forty years later, against the odds, CARJ has lived up to that vision and commitment.  Today however, rather than spend too much time celebrating the past, we wish to look to the future.  We are launching a new Racial Justice Agenda for Change and we will spend the year reflecting on that Agenda in the light of Catholic Social Thought and the prophetic men and women who have given their lives to the struggle for racial justice.

The following is our provisional plan for the CARJ 40th Anniversary Year (2024).

  • We will launch the celebration of our 40th Anniversary, with an initial reference to our Agenda for Change, around Racial Justice Sunday in 2024. The Agenda for Change will be explored more during the year.
  • We will hold two national events – 25 May 2024 in London and 21 September 2024 in Oldham.
  • We will hold a series of Webinars on relevant topics
  • We will hold at least one Racial Justice Ambassadors training session for young people.
  • Local groups will be encouraged to join in these activities and to organise their own events to celebrate the CARJ 40th
  • The CARJ AGM in November 2024 will pull together the energy and ideas of the 40 Anniversary Year.
