Freedom Song Gospel Event at the Hackney Empire
In 1871 a group of Freed Slave Singers from Nashville Tennessee began their tour of the USA and Europe to raise money to build the first Black University after the emancipation of the slaves and to fight for the right of all African Americans to be educated. They introduced the world to plantation spirituals never heard in public before including ‘Steal Away’ and ‘Swing Low Sweet Chariot’, singing before Queen Victoria and in cathedrals and concert halls across Britain along the way.
A century and half later, Vox Holloway Community Choir is teaming up with Hackney Empire community choir and young people from local schools to tell the singers inspiring story.
